One of the reasons millions of tourists flock to Thailand every year is the favourable exchange rate. The Thai baht compares well with most European and North American currencies
You’d normally pay an arm and a leg for stunning white beaches, fragrant cuisine and buzzing nightlife. Not so in Thailand. No wonder it’s one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations of the last decade
It’s possible to get by on a budget of a few hundred baht per day by staying in cheaper hostels, using local transport, splurging on expensive meals out
Street food can be a good option to keep costs down but you may need an adventurous palate
Quieter islands like Ko Chang, national parks like Khao Yai and Khao Sok, or rural Isaan in the north of the country see far fewer tourists
Another way to beat the crowds and save money is to visit in the low season of July and August, when prices will be at their lowest
The Thai baht is the sole legal currency of Thailand and is issued by the Bank of Thailand. There are 100 satang to a baht.
In 2007 the Bank of Thailand introduced a new silver 2 baht coin that was only slightly larger than the existing 1 baht coin, and consequently very easily confused. You will often find that someone has written a number ‘2’ on the coin with a marker, in order to differentiate it. A new, brass-coloured, 2 baht coin was issued in 2009, in order to reduce this confusion.
Name: Thai baht
Currency abbreviation: THB
Currency symbol: ฿
Notes: 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000
Coins: 25 and 50 satang, 1, 2, 5 and 10 baht
The 10 baht note was replaced by a coin, so you won’t get new ones. But old 10 baht notes are still in circulation and used occasionally.
Thailand is the only country to use the Thai baht officially.
You can buy Thai baht online using our click and collect service or in thousands of Post Office branches that sell currency. Find your nearest branch. We can deliver Thai baht to your home if you order online, too.
You may also get a better exchange rate if you order online. Buying larger quantities at a time can reduce the exchange rate further. And, if you buy at a good time for the pound, you can lock in that great rate.

The highest value Thai baht banknote is 1000. The 25 and 50 satang coins are so low in value they’re almost worthless. Once received, they’re very hard to get rid of. Some tourists keep them as souvenirs. Others give them away to beggars or as tips.
